Brett Whiteley was born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1956. In 1975 he began painting, and from the age of 19 his work was frequently shown in galleries. He has been a member of the Commonwealth Institute of Painters since 1981. He has completed one major commission for the Opera House, Sydney (1989), and nine works for the National Gallery of Australia
He lives with his wife and two children in Bowral, New South Wales.
